Original Nuremberg Bratwurst

The original Nuremberg Bratwurst is just 7 to 9 centimeters long and weighs a maximum of 25 grams. Compared to other bratwursts, that's quite small. But don't let that fool you; the flavor is enormous. The reason for its small size probably dates back several centuries. But the most important thing is the taste anyway.

European protected geographical indication "Original Nürnberger Rostbratwurst"

In 2003, the Nuremberg bratwurst received the European PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) seal. This confirmed and stipulated that all bratwursts marketed as "Original Nuremberg Rostbratwurst" must be produced in the city of Nuremberg according to a specified recipe. This made the original bratwursts the first in the world to receive protected designation of origin. Today, the protection association conducts inspections in the city of Nuremberg and throughout Germany. These include re-weighing and re-measuring. In the event of violations, fines and even severe penalties are imposed. No sausage may be too long, too short, or too heavy, as this violates the established criteria.

The First Nuremberg Bratwurst Award

The Nuremberg Bratwurst Prize was awarded for the first time in 2004. The first winner was Kerstin Greiner, a journalist for the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Frequently Asked Questions about our Nuremberg Sausages

For the main course, it's best to calculate 6-8 sausages per person; as a side dish, 3-4 pieces are enough. The small Nuremberg sausages are only 7-9 cm long and weigh about 20-25 grams per piece.

The authentic Nuremberg bratwurst is traditionally filled in sheep casing. This natural casing provides the characteristic bite and typical snap when you bite into it.

Yes, the sausages turn out perfectly in a pan with a little oil over medium heat. Fry them for about 8-10 minutes, turning them regularly, until they are golden brown all over.

Fresh sausages will keep in the refrigerator at 2-4°C for about 2-3 days. However, you can also easily freeze them and, when needed, place them directly into the pan from frozen.

The Nuremberg sausage is significantly smaller at 7-9 cm than the Thuringian sausage, which is 15-20 cm long. While the Nuremberg sausage is mainly seasoned with marjoram, caraway and garlic dominate in the Thuringian sausage.

Classically, you serve them with sauerkraut and medium-hot mustard. Potato salad, fresh horseradish are also popular, or you can serve them as the Franconian specialty "Blaue Zipfel" – bratwursts cooked in vinegar broth.

No, do not prick the Nuremberg sausages. The high-quality sheep casing will not burst, and the sausages will remain nice and juicy as no meat juice will escape.
